Construction on the beautifully grand building that stands here today commenced in 1887, the purpose of the building was a convent and secondary school which would be built, run and maintained by the formidable Brigidine Nuns originally form Abbyleix Ireland. By 1904 the building was all but complete and was serving the Beechworth and Surrounding districts.

Did you know?

Due to a drop in student numbers the convent was closed by 1978 when for the first time in its rich history the grand building was sold on to private enterprise.

That in July 1986 Graeme and Pam Bell became the new owners of The Old Priory. Along with Danielle, Rebecca and Jacqui their 3 young daughters the Bells set to work on their labor of love. They opened up to the public for Bed and Breakfast Accommodation, and carried on hosting School Camps.

That in 2012 the Priory expanded the business again and launched an alfresco Café, Priory Local was the dream of Pam and Graeme’s daughter Danielle. Danielle along with Chef partner Daniel opened the café which showcased the fine local produce available in Beechworth all in the tranquil setting of the lush Priory gardens.
